Brought a new puppy home? It’s exciting, we know! But with new pets comes the responsibility of pet care and training. Puppy training can be challenging, but if you use the right techniques, your pup will start obeying you in no time.
In this article, we’ve shared the best tips for training your new best friend.
Reward Them
Rewarding good behavior works wonders. The process of using rewards to cultivate good behavior is scientifically called “positive reinforcement.” The opposite is punishment, which you use to limit unwanted behavior.
It’s easy to lose patience when training your puppy and resort to punishment very quickly. But be mindful that it can cause your pup to lose motivation, making the training process more difficult for you.
To encourage quick learning, you can reward your fur baby with praises and treats like peanut butter popsicles. Your puppy will crave more of it which you can use as an advantage to train them!
Short Training Sessions
It’s not just us humans, but puppies have short attention spans too! If you keep your training sessions too long, your pup can get bored and stop looking forward to more sessions.
We recommend you limit training sessions to an average of 15 minutes a day. Break this down into three slots of 5 minutes each to keep things interesting.
Be Consistent
Be consistent while training your puppy. For example, when you’re teaching them to sit, stay and come, use the same signal/word to help your puppy pick up these words.
This applies to rewards too. Reward your puppy each time they demonstrate good behavior like going to the bathroom and sitting down when told to.
Puppies love attention, and consistent rewarding will motivate your pup to keep showing good behavior.
Crate Training
You can’t supervise your puppy 24/7. This is where crate training comes in handy. Crates ensure your puppy doesn’t develop bad habits like destructive chewing or soiling.
With time, your puppy will get comfortable in its crate, making puppy training easy for you.
Change environments
However, confining your puppy to a crate is not a long-term solution. Neither is letting it roam around your house, chewing and gnawing at rugs.
Very soon, your little furry friend will crave a change of environment.
You can take it to the beach, park, or somewhere else where it can be around fellow pups.
